Big Blue Water Tower Dedicated

A ceremony occurred on Wednesday, dedicating the blue water tower to John Stevenson Madkins Jr, a long time employee of the Oxford public works department.

Family members of Madkins gather on Wednesday to attend the dedication ceremony.

The blue water tower near the Square was dedicated to John Stevenson Madkins Jr on Wednesday. Madkins was an employee of the public works department and helped to ensure that Oxford would always have clean water. City officials and public works employees gathered at the water tower to honor Madkins.

A large stone monument was placed in front of the tower, dedicating the tower to Madkins after Mayor Pat Patterson read a resolution for the honor. Madkins' son D'Marius Madkins, widow Rudy Madkins, and daughter Angel Madkins were at the ceremony to watch the dedication.

Madkins began working for the Oxford public works department at the age of 18 and worked full time until 2006, working part time in his later years. Madkins died Nov. 30, 2013 at the age of 66, but not without leaving a wonderful legacy behind.

Madkins was dedicated to his job and many people at the ceremony showed their appreciation for Madkins. "For 47 years, he gave his blood, sweat and tears to make sure Oxford residents had clean water," said Water Department Superintendent Chad McLarry
