Why the Web Still Matters

This week Ben Thompson discussed a report done by Flurry that depicts the increased usage of apps versus the usage of the internet browser, with 14% using the internet and 86% using apps. While the numbers don't lie and I am certainly an avid iPhone app user, Ben really puts an end to the question when he explains "the web is like water: it fills in all the gaps between things like gaming and social with exactly what any one particular user wants". As readers we are accustomed to reading the news online and having the next story there with a click; getting and giving new information has never been easier. With this kind of accessibility there is no doubt that the web is expanding, and so are its users. Whether we are expanding into new and more complex apps or simply sticking to Facebook and Twitter, the internet is constantly involved providing links to stories, videos and photos. Despite what the numbers say the internet will always be the core and the filler between the many things we do on our computers and smart phones.
