On Wednesday, city officials and public workers gathered around the Oxford water tower near the square to dedicate it to John Stevenson Madkins Jr., who died on Nov. 30, 2013.

Madkins, who began his work in public service at the age of 18, was well known in Oxford for giving all his time and effort to making sure the citizens had clean water.

A large stone monument dedicating the tower to Madkins was revelealed Wednesday during the ceremony. Many people, including mayor Pat Patterson, came out to share their stories of Madkins' knowledge and expertise, as well as his friendship and the impact he made on their lives.

All agreed that Madkins not only knew the Oxford water system like the back of his hand, but also had a heart the size of the water tower being dedicated to his memory.
